Bromley have sacked manager Andy Woodman two days before their key League One fixture against Peterborough United. The decision comes with the club in 23rd place after a run of five consecutive defeats, including a 4-0 home loss to Leicester City last weekend. Bromley sit 23rd in League One on just eight points from ten games, having recorded only two wins and two draws so far this season.
Woodman’s departure was confirmed on Tuesday, ending a tenure that began in March 2021. He led the club to the FA Trophy in 2022, promotion to the Football League in 2024, and the League Two title last season. His contract, extended until 2028 last summer, was terminated by mutual agreement.
Club owner Robin Stanton-Gleaves said Woodman was a pleasure to work with and wished him well. Former defender Byron Webster has been placed in interim charge for the immediate future.
The timing is stark, with Bromley hosting 21st-placed Peterborough on Wednesday in a vital match at the bottom of the standings. Woodman’s final game was the heavy defeat to Leicester, a result that extended a miserable run where the team has conceded 25 goals in ten league games while scoring only nine. Their recent form shows five straight losses, including that 4-0 defeat to Leicester on Tuesday 20 October, a 1-0 loss at Stockport County on Saturday 17 October, and a 2-1 defeat at Mansfield Town on Saturday 10 October.
Despite his legendary status for the historic promotions, this season’s struggles proved decisive. Bromley have taken just eight points from their opening ten matches and are one point from safety. They are also a significant 14 points behind the league leaders, Stockport County. They face a critical week with games against three of the bottom four sides after the Peterborough match.
Potential candidates for the permanent role are already being considered, with names like Stuart Maynard and Dean Brennan linked. The club’s next manager will inherit a squad needing to address a leaky defence quickly. Webster’s first task is to prepare the team for Wednesday’s must-win home game against Peterborough, who are 21st in the table.
